The most beautiful running tracks in Düsseldorf
Discover the city from a new side, off the beaten track: Düsseldorf offers a range of attractive running tracks for every fitness level - beginners, ambitious runners, long-distance joggers or friends of short power sprints. They combine your training with magical views and new discoveries in your city. Whether you're looking for new routes for your city runs or want to enjoy the peace and quiet in forests and castle parks - the state capital is a true paradise for joggers. Are you looking for inspiration for new routes? We introduce you to the ten most beautiful running routes in Düsseldorf.
Running in Düsseldorf: on the Rhine dyke in Oberkassel
The city route stretches for about eight kilometres along the riverbank. It runs predominantly over asphalt. However, you can sometimes take the paths of the Rhine meadows. You start, for example, at the Heerdt district sports facility and walk along the Rheinknie and Oberkassler bridges with great views of the old town. At the lower dike path it becomes quieter, almost village-like with grazing sheep on lush meadows. On hot days you choose the shady running track along the upper dike path towards Dominikus hospital. At this point, the Rhine makes a nice bend and while running, your gaze falls on the opposite beach on the Lausward. Along the Kaiser-Friedrich-Ring you can really get going again: this section is popular for short sprints to the final spurt.
Around the Unterbacher See
Running in Düsseldorf can be like a holiday: At Unterbacher See, at any rate, you feel like you're on holiday in places. The shady route leads mainly through forests and thus over loose ground. Tip: Make sure you have suitable running shoes for unpaved surfaces. A tidy profile is important to avoid falls and injuries. The running route along the shore is small but nice: it runs for about six kilometres and offers beginners numerous opportunities to rest. You will also find public toilets along the popular jogging route. Passionate runners simply do several laps - after all, there are always new things to discover between the forest and the lake. A good start and end point is the lido Nordstrand with its café and beer garden, where you can enjoy a cool drink after a successful run.
From Shadowstraße along the Rhine to Medienhafen
The running route known as the Parliamentary Embankment Circuit requires good physical condition. Most of the paths are asphalted, and in some parts a little surefootedness is required. You start at the popular shopping mile Shadowstraße, but do not run towards the shops, but towards the Rhine. There you will have a great panoramic view towards the Rhine Tower and the Old Town. A first highlight on the route is this tower, which you reach after about nine kilometres. The route continues towards the Media Harbour with its spectacular architecture. At the old harbour you have to pay attention to the path: Discarded rails and cobblestones can be tripping hazards. At the Media Harbour you can recover from your run in one of the numerous cafés and bars or you can take a break on the other side of the Rhine: Through Oberkassel, you will cross the Theodor-Heuss-Bridge back towards the old town.
Through the Düsseldorf Volksgarten
Old trees, lakes, meadows, water gardens: the Volkspark is a classic for jogging in Düsseldorf. One of the best routes with a starting point at the Volksgarten S-Bahn station takes you about 5.5 kilometres towards Südpark through one of the most beautiful parks in the state capital. The way there or back leads along the (south-)eastern outer borders of the area as well as at the Südpark farm and around the Deichsee. The terrain is mixed: asphalted paths, forest soil, cobblestones, gravel and split paths - there is a bit of everything. The route is also suitable for beginners. There is an ascent - a good opportunity for beginners to push their fitness. The Volksgarten Route is particularly recommended during the day, as the lighting is sparse or even non-existent in some sections.
Keep fit in Benrath Castle Park
With Schloss Benrath, there is a real gem Tief in the south of the city. The easy route is perfect for beginners. Trained runners use the route for sprints, jumps - and beautiful views of the pond, the castle and the old tree population. The circular route is almost four kilometres long and starts at the orangery. After about 500 metres you cross a small bridge and run a few metres outside the park, first along the road, later along the Rhine. The route ends at Urdenbacher Allee with its historic houses. It includes paved paths as well as clay and gravel surfaces. Thanks to the numerous gardens and views of the castle and Rhine, the Schlossparkrunde is considered one of the most beautiful running tracks in Düsseldorf.
Beautiful views in Himmelgeist
The Rhine Arch is one of many highlights on the route through the south of Düsseldorf. The approximately ten kilometres demand a lot of effort, but can also be mastered by beginners with a little more time. The Himmelgeist parking lot (Kölner Weg, corner Nikolausstraße) is a perfect starting point. You first run a few kilometres along the cycle path along the Himmelgeist Rhine arch - beautiful views included. Continue in the direction of the campsite, via the Holthausen waterworks to the Elbroichpark. The contemplative castle garden in the style of an English landscape garden is part of the final spurt, as it is only a few metres back to the hiking car park.
Cityrun through the new zoo district
You will walk just under 2.7 kilometres through the newly developing zoo district around Toulouser Allee with its spectacular new buildings. Where until recently excavators were still circling, today is one of the hippest residential areas and a popular running track for the short sprint at the end of the day. At times you run directly along the street, part of the route leads through the park. Start and finish can be located at the Deportation Memorial on Marc-Chagall-Straße, for example.
Jogging in Düsseldorf between Hofgarten and Kö-Bogen
The Hofgarten is a true oasis in the middle of Düsseldorf's city centre and is so popular with runners for good reasons. There is a beautiful circular route of almost three kilometres through the park landscape with its shady avenues, extensive meadows, playgrounds and streams. The Hofgartenterrassen, newly created with the Kö-Bogen, connect park, city and water. The route is suitable for beginners and advanced walkers; those who have trained simply run it several times. Thanks to well-developed park and asphalt paths, the route is safe and easy to master even for the untrained. However, it is only partially lit, so it is more suitable for a jogging round before sunset.
Bridge run with skyline view
The route between Golzheim and Niederkassel is ideal for a relaxed round after work. It begins, for example, on the Robert Lehr bank, runs along the Rhine park, the edge of the old town and along the Rhine terraces to the Oberkassel bridge. On the other side of the Rhine you walk through Ober- and Niederkassel and back over the Theodor-Heuss-Bridge to the starting point. Great views of the skyline with the Rhine Tower, Media Harbour and Old Town are included. The path is easy and can be mastered by beginners. It runs almost exclusively on asphalt. At the Rheinpark you can switch to meadows and park paths from time to time. Tip: Choose your starting time so that you cross the Oberkasseler Brücke at sunset - and don't forget your smartphone for great pictures of the sunset over the Düsseldorf skyline.
Short run in the Ostpark
You don't have much time, would you like to use your lunch break for a short running session or are looking for an easy route to relax after a hard day at work? The Ostpark, located between the freight railway line from Rath to Eller and the Wittelsbacher Straße in Grafenberg, presents itself as a perfect place for a short jogging session. Especially for beginners, the 1.3 kilometre long loop is ideal for getting started. Take a lap around the Ostparkweiher, enjoy shady paths from extensive meadows. Ambitious sportsmen use these for example for the small power unit in between. The ground is partly asphalted, no significant increases are to be noted. As the Ostpark is only partially illuminated, the route is mainly suitable for runs in daylight.
